Bible Notes
"They shall see eye to eye, when the Lord shall bring again Zion" (Isa. 52:8)—The phrase which is here translated "bring again Zion" could also be rendered "return to Zion." Consequently, while Smith prefers: "when the Lord restores Zion;" the Revised Version has: "when the Lord returneth to Zion." Similarly, Moffatt renders: "They see the Eternal face to face as he returns to Sion."
"The Lord hath made hare his holy arm" (Isa. 52:10)—The "arm," as the word is used metaphorically in the Bible, has been described as "an expressive emblem of power to direct, control, seize, overcome" (see Hastings' Dictionary). For instance, in II Kings 17:36, the Lord is said to have brought the people out of Egypt "with great power and a stretched out arm." Consequently, the expression "make bare the arm" is practically equivalent to "display or exhibit power." Moffatt translates: "All nations have seen the Eternal bare his sacred arm for action."
"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money" (Isa. 55:1)—In the East, water was often so scarce that it actually had to be purchased with money, as is the case in certain Eastern countries to this day. A practical instance of this to be found in the Old Testament is recorded in Numbers 20:19, where we read: "If I and my cattle drink of thy water, then I will pay for it." In the passage in Isaiah, however, it is pointed out that not only will the people receive water gratuitously, but wine and milk as well.
