"From twenty years old and upward"

[Written Especially for Young People]

Young people who love Christian Science are grateful for our Leader's provision in the Manual of The Mother Church for Sunday school instruction "up to the age of twenty years" (Art. XX, Sect. 1). The Christian Science organization makes this teaching available for boys and girls, not only during their school days, but also during the period of adjustment which follows when, as young people, they may have problems to work out.

As the time approaches for us to leave Sunday school, in obedience to the Manual, we may find our thought becoming clouded by a sense of impending loss. The question may present itself, "Why do we have to leave when we are twenty, even though we may be gaining great good from Sunday school?" This question came so insistently to one pupil, who would soon be twenty, that she determined to search for an answer. With the aid of a Bible concordance, she found the instance recorded in the first chapter of Numbers, where Moses and Aaron were commanded to number all the children of Israel "from twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel." It impressed her.

In the Christian Science textbook, Mrs. Eddy defines "children of Israel" in part as "some of the ideas of God beheld as men, casting out error and healing the sick" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 583). And on page 450 she says, "The Christian Scientist has enlisted to lessen evil, disease, and death; and he will overcome them by understanding their nothingness and the allness of God, or good."
