Daily Tribune
An article appearing in the Tribune recently may leave in the minds of some of your readers an erroneous impression of the Church of Christ, Scientist, and its members.
Christian Science is a religion, emphasizing individual responsibility. In the Manual of The Mother Church (Art. VIII, Sect. 1) Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, sets forth this definite admonition: "The members of this Church should daily watch and pray to be delivered from all evil, from prophesying, judging, condemning, counseling, influencing or being influenced erroneously." On page 447 of Science and Health she further declares that "the heavenly law is broken by trespassing upon man's individual right of self-government."
It will be clearly seen that to coerce, or to induce, any individual against his will, to give up material remedies, or abandon any other method of treating disease in order to "try" Christian Science, is fundamentally opposed to the practice of divine healing. The giving and the acceptance of Christian Science treatment is voluntary on the part both of the Christian Science practitioner and of the patient. In exceptional cases this treatment may be called for by the responsible guardians of or agents for the patient.
