The writer of a letter in your correspondence column...

Eastern Daily Press

The writer of a letter in your correspondence column seems to take exception to the words "mere faith" in a letter issued by the Christian Science Publication Committee. "Christian Science healing" is not "faith-healing." A dictionary definition of the adjective "mere" is "only this and nothing else." In the second chapter of his epistle, James says in part, "Faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone;" and again, "Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only."

Taking works to be the healing of moral and physical ills, which was Jesus' interpretation of the Word, faith would seem to be a steppingstone to spiritual understanding of the law of God whereby the healing is accomplished.

I am sure your correspondent will agree that this is not belittling faith. Mrs. Eddy says in her book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 23), "Faith, advanced to spiritual understanding, is the evidence gained from Spirit, which rebukes sin of every kind and establishes the claims of God."
