Proper Alignment

Inspecting the condition of a car's tires one day, the owner and driver noticed that the tread on one was worn in very uneven patches. An expert was consulted and the following information obtained: the front wheels of the automobile were out of alignment, and this not only had caused the condition of the tire but, because of the added resistance and friction, had undoubtedly increased the car's consumption of gasoline. The fundamental error being corrected, its resultant errors quickly disappeared.

There was much in this occurrence for a Christian Scientist to ponder, for it was seen to have a very definite application to human experience. First, the word "alignment" was analyzed. It is derived from the verb "align," which means "to adjust or form to a line." As the thought was pursued still further, it was realized that if certain outward and visible conditions, whether in the home, business, or the material body, seem to display the irregularities of inharmony, maladjustment, or friction and consequent wear and weariness, the seeming cause may very well be a lack of proper mental alignment.

The masquerading cause being detected, the next step obviously is to consider with what or whom one must come into line, and how. Man being the direct offspring of the one perfect God, as recorded in the first chapter of Genesis, his spiritual lineage is pure and undiverted. Therefore, our first necessity is to claim this divine lineage and so admit our permanent unity with Mind, Life, and Love.
