"My burden is light"

[Original article in German]

A student of Christian Science had difficult problems in her family circle. Life seemed to be a burden, and the phrase "vale of tears" seemed only too applicable to her case. Now and then the temptation came to her to think, "I cannot live any longer." But just then the following freeing, liberating thought was given to her through a lecture on Christian Science.

The lecturer said, in part: "Sometimes the statement is made, 'I am tired of life.' If the one making this remark were to realize that God is the Life of man and that Life manifests itself in joyous, free, healthy, loving thoughts, whereas sorrowful, limited, diseased, hateful suggestions are death,—were he to realize this he would probably alter his statement and say: 'I am tired of death. I will change my thinking and live.'"

The student proceeded to build on the basis of the last sentence, "I will change my thinking and live." Faithfully and perseveringly she studied the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, and the German edition of The Herald of Christian Science. Daily she studied the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly with great care. And gradually she saw the liberating light of Truth shining on her path. She understood better Jesus' saying, "My burden is light."
