Bible Notes

"Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord?" (Isa. 40:13)—It is of interest to note that the Hebrew verb "taken," here translated "directed," is the same as that rendered "meted out" in the preceding verse. Its literal meaning is "to regulate, measure, estimate;" and since "ruach" (Spirit) can also be tanslated "mind" (Brown, Driver, Briggs: Hebrew Lexicon, p. 925: col. 2), we should be justified in rendering: "Who has measured the Mind of the Lord?" Moffatt has: "Who ever moved the mind of the Eternal?" and Smith: "Who has directed the mind of the Lord?"

"For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things" (Rom. 11:36)—In the original language of the New Testament, as in the familiar rendering of the Authorized Version, this statement is set down in a somewhat condensed form, and modern translators generally expand it, attempting thus to clarify the sense. Thus Goodspeed suggests: "For from him everything comes; through him everything exists; and in him everything ends!" Weymouth (fifth edition): "For all proceeds from Him, and exists by Him and for Him;" and Moffatt: "All comes from him, all lives by him, all ends in him."

"Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, accetable unto God" (Rom. 12:1)—This literal rendering of the Greek is followed with only slight variation by a majority of the modern translators. Weymouth, however, suggests: "I plead with you ... to present all your faculties to Him as a living and holy sacrifice accetable to Him." Goodspeed renders: "I appeal to you ... to offer your bodies in a living sacrifice that will be holy and accetable to God;" and Moffatt: "I appeal to you ... to dedicate your bodies as a living sacrifice, consecrated and accetable to God."
