"Sovereign remedies"

In a single sentence on page 283 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany," Mrs. Eddy states the means whereby salvation is assured to mankind. She says, "Right thoughts and deeds are the sovereign remedies for all earth's woe." Who will deny the sovereign power of right thoughts and deeds? Who will deny that only through righteous thinking and living will the errors of material sense be corrected, the afflictions of mortals done away with? This seems very simple, yet how much is implied in the statement that the practice of righteousness is the only way whereby the sorrows and sufferings of mortals can be assuaged and overcome!

The remedy for earth's woe which Christian Science gives is the remedy which Christ Jesus taught and applied. Throughout his entire earthly ministry the Master sought to make known the truth about God and His law, and man's relationship to God under this law, in order that men should think rightly and act rightly. The Sermon on the Mount, including the Beatitudes, brings this out. This compendium of spiritual wisdom shows throughout Jesus' intent to spiritualize human thought, and gives the assurance that victory will finally be gained over material sense and self, perfection being the ultimate goal. "Be ye therefore perfect," he said, "even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect" (Matthew 5:48).

Christ Jesus exemplified in his own life the power of right thinking to destroy earth's woes. Every healing of sickness, sin, sorrow, and lack he accomplished showed this. Could palsy, leprosy, blindness, and lunacy have been healed, as he healed them, had he not understood the perfection of God and His spiritual universe? Could sin in its various forms have been destroyed by him had he not known the perfection of man as the image of God? In every instance right thinking, based on inspired spiritual understanding, underlay the deeds wrought by the great Way-shower, who was the Founder of Christianity.
