Preparation for Service

[Written Especially for Young People]

Today, in any line of work, the call is for special training, for preparedness. Skilled workmen are much in demand. How do these workmen gain their skill? By means of study and training—preparation. Many years ago, Paul gave this advice to his young helper, Timothy: "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

All down the ages there have been numerous examples of those who succeeded in rendering efficient service because of their faithful study, their years of training or preparation. The hard experiences of Moses, and also his hours of quiet meditation and communion with God while tending his father-in-law's sheep, equipped him to undertake the important service which he so successfully carried out. Daniel rose to his high position in the Babylonian court only after years of faithful preparation. Later on, Jesus proved to the world how much his years of preparation had done to fit him for his inestimable service to mankind.

Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, accomplished the writing of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and established the great Christian Science movement with all its activities, after years of consecrated study and preparation for these tasks.
