I am deeply grateful for the many blessings which Christian Science has brought into my life.
Soon after I began the study of its teachings, I had a convincing proof of the mental nature of contagion. During the so-called epidemic of Spanish influenza in 1919, everybody at the boardinghouse where I was staying was attacked by that ailment except myself. Yet I was the one who, to human sense, took no precautions whatever. A friend who was extremely cautious in his material contacts, but paid no attention to mental contacts, being full of fear, soon found himself in the grip of this belief, whereas I enjoyed complete freedom. I did not know much of the truths of Christian Science, but I recollect that one statement in particular made a deep impression on me, and no doubt was my support and protection, namely, "God never punishes man for doing right, for honest labor, or for deeds of kindness, though they expose him to fatigue, cold, heat, contagion" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 384). The logic of that statement is so simple that a child can understand it, and more than once have I found out in the intervening years that it also takes the simplicity of a childlike faith to demonstrate it.
While I was on a visit to Boston some years ago, blood poisoning developed in one of my feet. I had stepped on a rusty nail, and instead of firmly declaring the truth, as our Leader tells us to do, I merely ignored the whole matter. I was confined to bed for three or four days and secured the help of a practitioner. Absent treatment was given. Soon the swelling went down, the impurities discharged, and on the fifth day I was able to drive home without any inconvenience. I am particularly grateful for the fact that, except when I stood on the foot, I was completely free from pain during the entire experience.
