"Which one is it?"
The last chapter of Joshua consists mainly of his rehearsal of the illumination, blessing, and protection enjoyed by generations of those who served and trusted God. With this in thought Joshua said to those whom he was addressing, "Choose you this day whom ye will serve." The choice rested with them. Mental consent to that which is undesirable is never a necessity.
On page 270 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" our Leader writes: "One only of the following statements can be true: (1) that everything is matter; (2) that everything is Mind. Which one is it? Matter and Mind are opposites." Should we appear to be faced, for instance, with a belief of disease, we can prove that the way of health lies in the way of scientific choosing between the real and the unreal. As we cast our single vote for infinite Mind, this scientific choice has support of Mind, and therefore the extinction of the false belief and its consequences is assured. If matter is unreal, how can disease be real? Either disease is real or health is real. "Which one is it?" Many times our true choice needs to be renewed and confirmed. With each confirmation and renewal we grow stronger, surer, nearer to complete ascension above the false sense of materiality.
Christ Jesus emphasized the impossibility of compromise between God and mammon, Spirit and matter. To him the way of emancipation consisted in the undeviating choice of trueness to God, the heavenly Father of all, and his life illustrated the triumph of Truth and Love over every assault of evil. He pointed out that a good tree brings forth only good fruit. He declared, "I and my Father are one," and this conscious unity with the omnipotence of divine Mind carried him triumphantly through every test. The way of spiritual conquest for each one is clearly defined, and students of Christian Science are proving in various ways that by choosing to serve God, not mammon, they are solving the problems of character, health, finance, and human relationships.
