About five years ago I first heard Christian Science mentioned, but believing it to be a pastime for the higher classes and for those who had nothing to do, I had no wish to learn more about it, though at that time I was very unhappy and in poor health. But eventually, in order to humor a friend, I accompanied her to one of the branch churches in our city. From the moment I crossed the threshold of that church, my life took on a new aspect. The kind and happy faces, the loving, positive thoughts, creating an atmosphere of joyful serenity; the uplifting, helpful words I heard from the platform, the singing of the beautiful hymns, in which I joined, forgetting that I had not sung since I lost my eldest girl—all this showed me that I had, in the eleventh hour, found a haven. I left the meeting with tears of joy in my eyes and happier than I had been for years. And never, during the years which have followed, have I lost this feeling of grateful happiness, even in the midst of severe trials, for I have always known that Christian Science teaches the one great truth and gives us the opportunity to avail ourselves of it.

We have experienced many healings of different kinds in our family. The first one, which made my children believe in Christian Science, was of suppuration and disease of the bone in a finger, which had been operated upon seven times the year before, and had caused much pain and anxiety. It was completely healed in two treatments. For many years I had suffered from a weak heart and insomnia, and for a long time I had taken a great deal of medicine, especially soporific drugs. Finding that drugs did not really help me, but rather made me ill, I put them away, only keeping my sleeping drafts. During the first few months of my study of Christian Science I went on with the medicine, but when I learned more about the loving, almighty God and His idea, perfect man, I understood that this weakness was inconsistent with my state of being the perfect image of God, so I went to a practitioner. Lovingly, patiently, she worked for me and, though at that time I understood little of this Science, I was healed in a very short time.

Our little girl was healed of a great fear, which overshadowed her whole existence—fear of school fellows and of life outside her home. Her health was in a poor state too, and I had always feared that we were going to lose her, as we had lost her sister. When I was beginning to learn about Christian Science, she fell ill with fever and with very bad pains in her groins. My husband called a doctor, who declared the case to be dangerous and gave us cause to fear for her life. In that extremity I turned to Christian Science and asked a practitioner for help, which was lovingly given. The little girl was taken to the home of a Scientist, as I was far too anxious to be a good nurse. Here a new life began for the child, and in a short time she was entirely well, for which I am immensely grateful. She is now a healthy, happy young girl. She has had many blessings from attending the Sunday school, and depends entirely upon Christian Science with regard to her daily life and her schoolwork.
