God-sustained Activity
It is deeply interesting to observe from a careful perusal of the Gospel of John that Jesus acknowledged God to be the source of all his power—that spiritual power by which he wrought the many miracles of healing which characterized his ministry. For example, Jesus is recorded as having said to the Jews who persecuted him (John 5:17, 19), "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work," and, "The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise." These sayings show clearly that the Master understood God to be the one supreme power or Mind, and that man, reflecting Him, reflected His power. As the Father knew, so did the Son understand. In every particular the Son reflected the activity of Mind.
A statement by Peter in the tenth chapter of Acts definitely points to the fact that Jesus' power was derived from God. It reads, "God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him." Jesus understood that man coexisted with God, as God's—Mind's—idea, and that, accordingly, he reflected the spiritual qualities of God whereby he could destroy the false beliefs of evil—the devil—which were responsible for all human ills. Jesus' healings were the inevitable result of thinking which was scientific, because based on absolutely correct knowledge of God and man.
Christian Science renders these things intelligible by elucidating the Science which underlies them. Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 187), "The divine Mind includes all action and volition, and man in Science is governed by this Mind." God is infinite, all-inclusive Mind. Hence all real activity, volition, and power, is in Mind. And since man is the idea, son, or image of Mind, man reflects the activity, volition, and power of God. Moreover, being the reflection of Mind, man is governed solely by perfect divine intelligence.
