Desiring to bear witness to the fact that Christian Science...
Desiring to bear witness to the fact that Christian Science is the Comforter promised by Christ Jesus, I offer this testimony in joyous thanksgiving.
Laws of heredity, materia medica, and surgery had dominated my life since childhood. This resulted in a keen sense of separation from normal happy activity. A measure of solace was gained through an earnest search of the Bible and communion with God. This search revealed many promises of deliverance from human want and woe. Pastors and loyal friends were eagerly questioned with regard to the hope contained in these passages, but I was compassionately told that they were not for our day, but were instituted at that time to prove the supremacy of one God and the divinity of Christ Jesus. These statements were accepted for a time, and mental and physical ordeals were courageously endured.
Just when things seemed most complex, the loving efforts of a little child led me to ponder her mother's earnest statements regarding the healing efficacy of Christian Science. I could accept these only in part, for thought still clung tenaciously to materia medica and surgery. Resigned to fate, as I thought, I entered a training school for nurses during the World War, assured that I could find peace in alleviating the sufferings of others. This was true in a large measure, but things over which I had no control forced me to give up this vocation.
