We often hear people testify that at one time they were delicate and under normal weight and that after they took up the study of Christian Science, they gained in strength and weight. According to mortal sense I was over normal weight. I spoke to a Christian Science practitioner about this and was told to take up the study of "substance." I did this and held to the statement, "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy, p. 468), and that all true substance is God, Spirit, Mind.
I gave no thought to the argument of error that if I ate certain things I should still be too heavy, but ate what was set before me, knowing that matter has no power to create or destroy. I looked entirely away from matter to Spirit. At one time I weighed over two hundred pounds; today I weigh about one hundred and seventy pounds. I did not use any material methods to lose this weight, but held to the true meaning of Life and substance.
I should like to mention another healing that I experienced. Over five years ago I fell and injured my back. For over a year I could not get in or out of bed, or sit down or get up, without great pain or difficulty. Then I was asked to read from Science and Health to a man who could not read. Later I was asked to read to another person. I became so absorbed in this work that I completely forgot about my own physical difficulty. After a few weeks I realized that I was having no discomfort in getting in or out of bed and was having no pain. The healing was accomplished while I was "absent from the body" and "present with the Lord." This took place over three years ago.
