About thirty-five years ago I attended a lecture on Christian Science
About thirty-five years ago I attended a lecture on Christian Science. All that I recall of the lecture is the thought given out that whatever one might think of Christian Science, "it works." For about fifteen years I thought no more of the subject until it was simultaneously brought to my attention from different sources. When I read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," my first reaction was to write a critique of this work and system. I was not then aware of how much bitter criticism the book had already weathered. However, on closer study I began to get Mrs. Eddy's meaning and to understand somewhat her teaching. About this time I saw some striking instances of Christian Science healing, which heightened my interest and brought a degree of conviction that beyond a doubt put me on the side of Christian Science. Since then, increased familiarity with the doctrine of the Science of being as taught by our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, and its application in the affairs of everyday life has only strengthened my conviction that Christian Science is indeed the revelation of Truth. From my own experience I know that disease is both healed and prevented by Christian Science, and that discordant conditions of all sorts are removed through the application of its teachings.
Among various cases of healing through this Science which I have witnessed, the following may be cited as examples. I had already made arrangements to have my young daughter's tonsils removed, having been advised that this was the best course to pursue, as they were said to be diseased and had not improved under local treatment. Then it occurred to. me that perhaps Christian Science would help, so I canceled arrangements for the operation and turned the case over to a Christian Science practitioner. The condition was quickly healed, and there has been no further annoyance from that source. That was about twenty years ago. When only a few months old one of my children was stricken with what the doctor called bronchial pneumonia. We had lost a child a few years before with very similar symptoms, and the situation seemed dark. We relied wholly on the work of a Christian Science practitioner, and the baby recovered in a few days and has had no serious illness since that time, fourteen years ago. For several years prior to studying Christian Science I felt it wise to have a certain prescription handy and often carried the medicine with me. That burden has gone, too, for which I am happy.
In addition to numerous healings, which certainly have been important, I have found in Christian Science a basis for the understanding and interpretation of the phenomena of life in general. I have judged Christian Science by its fruits and have not found it wanting. For this Science and all the agencies which our Leader established to help one to progress, including class instruction, I am indeed grateful.
