Ever since early girlhood I had been seeking for fuller unfoldment of Truth. I had committed to memory many passages of Scripture and had read the Bible through. While teaching in the Friends' Firstday School, in which I had been reached, again and again the thought came to me, If we endeavor to follow the teachings of Jesus, why is it that we do not have power to heal disease as he did, and as he taught his disciples to do?
After I had examined various religions for more light, Christian Science came into my experience. Careful and persistent study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and other works by Mary Baker Eddy cleared my thought and revealed to me a new standpoint, changing my whole concept of life and lifting me into a sense of joy which I had never before known. Some chronic ills and the belief in little power of endurance gradually disappeared. Friends remarked about my much improved health. It was becoming clear to me that, as Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 120), "Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind," and that Christian Science is the truth which makes free, if we continue in the Word.
In a great measure, Christian Science has been to me a preventive of ills and mishaps. One instance of relief from a sense of physical suffering will always be gratefully remembered. I was alone. The specific name of the aliment was unknown to me, but the pain for some time was so intense it did not seem possible for me to move. An earnest uplifting of thought to a gain a realization of the divine presence and to know that being is spiritual and peaceful, brought unspeakable comfort; and a feeling of freedom came which vanquished the sense of illness. I arose healed, and at the regular time prepared to take up the duties of the day.
