Substance
Mrs. Eddy writes in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 178), "If the world were in ashes, the contents of 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' would remain immortal." The imperishable truths set forth in Science and Health are not inherent in the material volume: they are substance, and reveal substance to all who are proving the healing truths expressed in this work of inestimable value to all.
A dictionary defines "substance" as that "having real existence: a reality." It is only to material sense that matter seems present and substantial, and material sense is a false witness, devoid of truth or substance. Since divine Love is substance, there is no substance in Love's opposite—matter, fear, disease, sin. These are insubstantial shadows of material ignorance. Their annulment in human consciousness follows as the result of a substantial understanding of God and man's true identity.
Indestructible substance was glimpsed by Moses when he observed the burning bush which was not consumed. It was also evidenced in the experience of the three Hebrews who escaped destruction in the flames. It is being proved daily in the healing of sin and disease through Christian Science.
