In 1933, while living in England, I was knocked down by a motorcycle when I was crossing the road one day. I do not remember anything about the accident or what took place for some weeks afterwards, but I was informed that the police took charge of the situation and an ambulance was summoned, which conveyed me to the nearest hospital.
The injuries appeared to be so serious that it was thought I should not live to reach the hospital. The doctor's examination showed that I was suffering from concussion, fractured skull, and a fracture of the pelvic region. The injuries and shock were expected to prove fatal, but at the end of a week I was still alive.
By this time a Christian Science practitioner in London, to whom I usually turned for help, was informed of my condition, and immediately started treatment. After some weeks my memory, which till then had been a blank, began to return. I was on a fracture bed for eight weeks, and though great doubts were felt as to my being able to walk again, at the end of three months I was able to stand for a moment. Soon after that I was taken to a Christian Science House, being helped whilst there by a practitioner who was visiting that district, and there I learned to walk again. Later it was arranged that I should return to my own country, New Zealand; but before I left London I was examined by a doctor, who expressed his surprise at my recovery, saying that it was a miracle.
