Topic: Thanksgiving

[From the Spokesman Review, Spokane, Washington]

Thanksgiving can come only from a thankful heart. A lack of the grateful spirit—isn't that the answer to "What's wrong with the world?" Lack of gratitude to God, lack of thankfulness to the fathers for their gifts of liberty and good government under the Constitution. Discontent, envy, greed, have driven much of the thankful spirit from the hearts of the people, for discontent is the antithesis of thankfulness. Thankfulness is joy; discontent is torment. One is the beatific state; the other, purgatory.

"I fear that I am losing my spirit of thankfulness," said one who has prospered. "As a boy, that spirit was singing in my heart. I rejoiced in my meager personal possessions—the rough clothing of the period, the clumsy boots, one pair a year; the shelter of the little home, and its fire in winter."
