Some very interesting letters on "The Cause of Disease"...
Wanganui Herald
Some very interesting letters on "The Cause of Disease" have appeared recently in your correspondence column, and several writers have mentioned Christian Science in connection with this subject. But, while all the references have been friendly, they reveal an incomplete acquaintance with Christian Science viewpoints.
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 411), "The procuring cause and foundation of all sickness is fear, ignorance, or sin;" and on page 166: "As a man thinketh, so is he, Mind is all that feels, acts, or impedes action. Ignorant of this, or shrinking from its implied responsibility, the healing effort is made on the wrong side, and thus the conscious control over the body is lost."
One correspondent says that Christian Science, while having "a definite curative value," "should not be considered as a cure-all against all disease." Christian Science gives that spiritual understanding of the creator and His creation, and of His immutable law of love, which Christ Jesus so successfully applied to all the various problems presented to him; and he promised, in words which cannot possibly be twisted from their meaning, that the truth should be available to all who would follow strictly his teaching. Jesus made no attempt to classify disease, and no matter whether functional, organic, or mental, all his cases yielded to his knowledge of this fundamental, factual law.
