When I first began the study of Christian Science, it was...

When I first began the study of Christian Science, it was with the very ardent desire to help someone else, though my own need was equally pressing. And my own healing came first. We knew very little of Christian Science, but after looking into it on the recommendation of a friend and finding it good, a very earnest effort was made to grasp its fundamentals and be obedient to them. We gratefully attended the church services and purchased and read the literature. After I had read a while, feeling a sense of discouragement in failing to make the progress hoped for, I made a visit to a practitioner, although I did not ask for treatment. The loving, wise practitioner grasped the need at once. During this visit much fear and anxiety were wiped out and something of the beauty and joy of Truth was grasped. A few weeks later, while I was reading the LessonSermon from the Christian Science Quarterly, a feeling of humble gratitude welled up in my heart and Jesus' loving words, "Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always," came to mind, and I knew that our financial needs had been met. And so it proved to be, for in a few days a sale had been made through which our needs were met. All winter they were taken care of in this way, and by spring a better position awaited us.

Shortly after the first financial healing we were shown how physical needs are also met by spiritual means. One night in church I was suffering much pain, as had been the case almost continually for nearly a year, and while listening to the testimonies I tried to apply the truth in them to our needs. All at once my consciousness was illumined and so filled with the glory of God that the pain and disease were instantaneously healed. This healing was surgical in its effect and has been permanent. Several weeks later, while I was attending a lecture, it seemed the very windows of heaven were opened to me and a disease of long standing was instantaneously and permanently wiped out. It had taken much courage and study of the one hundred and third Psalm to get out of bed and face the winter storm to go to that lecture, but I have been amply repaid since that time during the twenty years of complete freedom from this disease.

Other healings have followed for myself and others, among them those of extreme sore throat recurring each winter, hemorrhoids, influenza, grief, wounds, and temperamental traits. This loving truth also makes us appreciative of the things so often taken for granted, such as home, companionship, friends, church and all that implies in the way of happy, active usefulness. We are humbly grateful for the wonderful vision of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and desire to see that vision grow brighter in our hearts.
