Spiritual Growth
There is a great yearning in the hearts of men for spirituality. Argue as the materialist may, the skeptic or the atheist, the fact remains that a vast number of the sons and daughters of men are eager to learn of spiritual things —the things of God —and to be able to prove for themselves the power of Spirit over so-called matter or material law. And those who already in some degree have had this yearning satisfied, are desirous of having their spirituality increased through added growth in understanding. Materiality never satisfies, but invariably satiates. The urge, therefore, is always toward the ultimate goal of spiritual perfection, where matter and evil are unknown, and God is acknowledged as reigning supreme over all.
There is in the world today the most potent influence for spiritual growth ever known. That influence is Christian Science, the Science of spiritual being, the Science of God and His creation. Christian Science reveals the truth about spiritual being and strips the disguise from every form of materiality and evil, laying bare its nothingness in the light of God's allness. God is All-in-all. There is therefore but one God, one Mind or Spirit; and God is infinite Love, perfect Principle. When one understands this truth he has taken the first great step in spiritual growth, the first great step in freeing himself from the false material or evil beliefs which claim to hold mankind in bondage. As Mrs. Eddy writes on page 275 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "The starting-point of divine Science is that God, Spirit, is All-in-all, and that there is no other might nor Mind, —that God is Love, and therefore He is divine Principle."
But after one is convinced of God's allness, of the truth that He is Mind, Love, the Principle of all reality, for spiritual growth there must follow the effort, the consecrated effort, to put into practice, or to demonstrate, the truth. Here we remember Christ Jesus' words, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Jesus had revealed spiritual truth "to those Jews which believed on him;" and admonition to them was that they should be steadfast, faithful, obedient, so that through the truth he had taught them they should become free, spiritual growth being implied as the freeing process.
