The Great Awakening

The cry goes out from the hearts of a great multitude, "If only I could understand!" As one business man expressed it recently, While civilization has given us much, and we are living in a so-called advanced age, yet sometimes it would seem that the ancients knew more than we know. Groping, striving, many a one is reaching out for he knows not what! The ephemeral nature of material things has been brought home to him; he is like a rudderless ship on a stormy sea—nothing to keep him to his course.

To such a one the great awakening through Christian Science that Life is God, Spirit, opens the door to a new world. Perhaps he has caught a glimpse of its possibilities at a church service or a lecture, through the healing of a friend or loved one; or the truth may have reached him through one of many other channels. In any case, the veil has been lifted for a moment, a gleam of light has penetrated his consciousness, a resolution to know more about this teaching is made, and he is embarked on the great quest.

Happy is he if the outset he says with the Psalmist, "Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me." Early in his progress he learns the truth of our Leader's words, "We cannot fill vessels already full" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 201), and one by one the old traits and mistaken desires are cast out to make room for the new. False theology is replaced with the true idea of God as ever-present good, proving health to be where sickness seemed to hold sway, gently lifting the curtain and revealing abundance instead of lack, joy in place of sorrow, courage where fear seemed to reign, and brooding over all a wondrous sense of ineffable peace.
