I was a very frail child owing to a spinal injury received at the age of three. Other forms of illness attacked me one after another until life seemed one continual round of taking care that I did not overexert or unduly expose myself. At the age of twenty-six I was unable to do any heavy work, and lifting more than very small weights was out of the question. Today I am doing all the work for a family of four, besides running a small store, and I can accomplish as much as any average woman.
I saw my mother healed in a few weeks of so-called nervous prostration after she had been bedfast for eight months; but I was not willing to investigate Christian Science for myself. I had left the church of which I had been a member since childhood on account of not having received the help and comfort I thought I had a right to expect. In fact I had decided that there must be something decidedly wrong with the whole system, since it promised so much and seemed to give so little. At about this time I met with a very great disappointment, and there seemed nothing left to live for. It was at this time that I began to read the testimonies in the Sentinels, and finally some of the articles, and I knew at once that I had found what I had so unavailingly sought in the other churches. I soon bought a copy of Science and Health, and from that time forward I used no more material remedies.
My son once severely injured his head while playing at school. He was picked up unconscious and taken to the office of a physician and I was notified. On my way to the office I called on a Christian Science friend and asked him to work for the child. When I arrived at the office two doctors and a nurse were in attendance, and they had him strapped to a bed to keep him quiet. The doctor told me that he had just administered a very powerful drug as the child had suffered a severe cerebral irritation. He also told me to call my husband, as the boy would become unmanageable again when he came out from under the influence of the drug, or he might die. In any case, he said that I should have to be very careful of him for a long time, and that it was possible he would never again be mentally competent. These laws were all set aside for after a few hours' sleep he awoke, healed. At the age of thirteen he passed intelligence examinations at school with a grade that indicated the mind of a seventeen-year-old person. He is now sixteen and considered a very brilliant lad. This is only one instance of the healing and protection we have experienced under the ministration of Christian Science.
