The Road Is Safe

ONE day some students of Christian Science who were spending the summer in a cabin in the mountains traveled a distance of seventy-five miles to visit a point of historic interest. Starting home late in the afternoon, they found themselves in the midst of a district which, since they had passed it a few hours before, had been visited by a cloud-burst, the flood having washed out bridges and damaged sections of road. In serious doubt as to whether they could proceed on their road and reach their cabin, they inquired whether anyone there had definite information about the road beyond. They were told in kind and encouraging words that as soon as the water had receded sufficiently their informant had driven over the road, where it lay in the flats, and had thus ascertained for the benefit of other travelers that no bridges were washed out and no barriers lay across the road. "There will be places where water will entirely obscure your way; where progress will appear to be dangerous; but do not be afraid, the road is safe ahead," he told them with the smiling certainty that accompanies definite knowledge.

Acting on this information the travelers proceeded, going unhesitatingly through long stretches where the road was invisible under a flow of water that covered the ground for several hundred feet in every direction. This condition that looked so terrifying proved to be harmless, and the road in every instance was easily traversable. They reached their home unharmed, rejoicing in the protection afforded them. They realized that, had they not been enlightened by the facts concerning it, they would have feared to venture over the road.

How often we as Christian Scientists have similar experiences in our journey from the material to the spiritual sense of being! Ahead, our road seems obscured by some darkening mortal belief. There appears to be no way around it, while disaster seems equally to await our advance directly through it. We cannot stay where we are, but through ignorance we fear to go ahead. However, Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, and Mary Baker Eddy, our beloved Leader, have explored the way. They have, likewise, passed their spiritual knowledge to us. Accordingly, for all who seek information from their words and follow their directions, the road is safe.
