The Christ

How truly do Christian Scientists believe in the divinity of Christ! On page 583 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, defines "Christ" as "the divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error." And on page 25 she further states that "the divinity of the Christ was made manifest in the humanity of Jesus." Jesus was the Way-shower, the example for all mankind. Then it must be the duty, as well as the glorious privilege, of every individual to manifest the Christ in his humanity. How impersonal and universal is the Christ-idea! As God is omnipresent, so is His manifestation ever present. Material sense alone shuts out the vision of the ever present Christ, while the pure in heart see God and His manifestation.

When he perceived that the disciples were clinging to his human personality for their salvation, instead of relying on the divine Principle which he was demonstrating or manifesting, Jesus said, "It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you." Just before his ascension he also said, "Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world." To regard "Jesus" and "Christ" as synonymous terms would be to make these two declarations appear contradictory; but the teachings of Christian Science elucidate them perfectly. The personal Jesus, his earthly mission ended, must withdraw; while the Christ, which he manifested throughout the whole of his earthly life, was to be further revealed as the Holy Ghost, the ever present Comforter.

When Mrs. Eddy received the healing which led her to the discovery of Christian Science, she caught a glimpse of the ever present healing Christ, and did not rest until this glimpse led her on to the complete revelation which to-day and forever establishes the fact that the Christ heals and saves even as when Jesus walked among men.
