So world-wide is the expectancy and recognition of Christian Science in its power to heal that should a healing not be effected it is sometimes made a subject of public comment. Mathematical science would scarcely be condemned because a student did not make correct use of its rules to work out a problem to a successful issue.

If healing in Christian Science has not been brought out, it is not because the basis of Christian Science is faulty; for it is established on the truth taught by Christ Jesus, who promised that the sick should recover, as a sign following their belief in God. Matthew records that on a certain occasion a father brought his son, whom he tenderly loved, to Jesus for healing, and explained that he had previously brought him to the disciples, but they could not cure him. "And Jesus rebuked the devil [evil]; and he departed out of him." When asked by the disciples the reason of their failure, Jesus said it was on account of their unbelief. Without condemnation, he then encouragingly told them that if they had faith nothing would be impossible to them.

A certain correspondent desires to sound a note of warning against Christian Science treatment in certain connections, because healing was not brought about for his (or her) friend, who, he (or she) says, "was persuaded by Christian Scientists to place herself in their hands." The Christian Science organization does not persuade persons to place themselves in its hands. A Christian Scientist, because of the hope that is in himself, as the result of what he has seen and demonstrated, might naturally approach one in distress, and offer that which he has proved. It is important to remember that all are free to choose their own system of healing, and that the individual alone is responsible for his choice. A surgeon who had operated on a woman for a malignant growth dismissed her with the advice to "pray to God that the disease might not return." She was healthy for a few years, when the trouble reappeared. Through treatment in Christian Science she was healed.
