Oneness
Not many realize that oneness is indivisible; that a plurality does not represent oneness. Mary Baker Eddy writes on page 336 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "God is indivisible." The Christian Scientist strives to gain an increasing understanding of omnipotent God as Father-Mother, and this goes hand in hand with the understanding of His indivisible oneness.
In religious as in family and in political life, the lack of understanding of the truth that oneness is indivisible is often evident. The result is obvious confusion; and mortals endeavor to find the solution through still more divisions and dissensions. To meet effectively and to destroy this evil necessitates an understanding of the real meaning of Christianity and of Christian living; and Mrs. Eddy's teaching, contained in the Bible and the textbook she has given to the world, enables us to obtain this. Jesus designated as the foremost commandment, "The Lord our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength." Let us ponder it and frequently ask ourselves whether it is being expressed in our thoughts and deeds; whether the one Lord is really our God, that is, the God whom we know and worship. This self-examination will uncover our errors, and we shall be able to meet them effectively and destroy them, in so far as we gain a unified concept of God. With this realization comes also the understanding of God as Principle, and of Principle as our Life.
In the chapter of Science and Health entitled "Footsteps of Truth" our Leader writes (p. 202), "The scientific unity which exists between God and man must be wrought out in life-practice, and God's will must be universally done." How shall this be accomplished? Christian Science is a practical religion, serving as a guide for all our footsteps. Oneness expresses the divine nature. The eternal God is One. Divine consciousness knows nothing of factions, separation, disunion; for factions are the opposite of oneness. Since, then, God is One, and man expresses Him, the application of this thought assigns to us our position of unity in religious, family, and public life.
