Dedication

A Dictionary definition of the word "dedicate" is "to set apart for sacred uses; consecrate; devote." To dedicate, then, is to consecrate; but what is it that we consecrate or dedicate? In I Chronicles we read that David asked his people, "And who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the Lord?"

And what of this service that we consecrate to the Lord? In her Message to The Mother Church for 1900 (p. 15) Mrs. Eddy writes: "In the words of St. John, may the angel of The Mother Church write of this church: 'Thou hast not left thy first love, I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.'" So it seems that service to God is coupled with patience and charity and faith and works.

Jesus said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." We know Jesus' works were healing works, works that brought peace, health, and life to mankind; and Christian Scientists are also doing these works, realizing that in so doing they are dedicating their lives to the service of the Lord.
