Several years ago, while in search of health and happiness,...
Several years ago, while in search of health and happiness, I learned of Christian Science through a friend who invited me to attend a Sunday service. I was impressed with the Lesson-Sermon and decided that I wanted to know more about this religion which seemed to explain God in a practical and understandable manner. My first impuse was to know the history of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, and this I learned through reading "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy" by Sibyl Wilbur. This was followed by reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, together with regular attendance at church services. Results from my efforts in this respect were quickly realized in improved health and a much more hopeful outlook. The medicines, physical exercises, and systems of dieting previously resorted to as remedial measures were discontinued and have not been used since. Through the understanding and help available in Christian Science, God has been my only physician for many years.
In 1917, after about fourteen months' service in a National Guard regiment on the Mexican border, and during the early part of the United States' participation in the world war, I was discharged from the service for physical disability diagnosed by army physicians as tuberculosis of both lungs. This diagnosis was confirmed at a well-known medical clinic. Change of climate, a great deal of rest, living outdoors under proper supervision, and change of occupation from office to outdoor work were recommended. Being at the time a student of Christian Science I immediately asked the aid of a practitioner, who lovingly took up the work for me in Christian Science. The healing was not instantaneous. However, I suffered no inconvenience and, with the exception of a brief visit to California during the winter of 1918, I have carried on office work regularly, without any loss of time and in perfect health. In 1919 I underwent a thorough medical examination and no trace of the trouble previously described could be found. The diagnoses made by the army physicians and at the medical clinic were given in writing and are still in my possession. Other physical ills have been quickly and permanently healed in Christian Science, such as influenza, a painful injury to the kneecap, and a severe sprain of the ankle.
The small understanding of divine Principle and of man's true relation to God acquired through the study of Christian Science has been helpful, beyond measure, in my business activity and home life. I am thankful to God for the many blessings received in Christian Science, and rejoice in the knowledge that this great truth, revealed by our dear Leader, is available to all mankind.
