Your report of a sermon entitled "Through Faith to Health," recently delivered by a visiting clergyman in Knox church, contains a reference to Christian Science which may have conveyed a wrong impression; hence space for correction will be appreciated. Christian Science does not make "claims of the performing of miracles," as the reverend doctor is reported to have stated, if the word "miracle" is used in the sense of divine interposition, or the suspension of what is termed natural law. On the contrary, the healing and redemptive effects of Christian Science are made manifest through a right understanding and correct application of spiritual law as taught and demonstrated by Christ Jesus. It is therefore entirely dissimilar to what is commonly called faith cure, autosuggestion, psychology, or "such illogical methods as magic or supernaturalism," all of which are based upon the action of the so-called human mind.

In the correct practice of Christian Science, the Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus" is recognized to be the only healing power. In her book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has written (Pref., p. xi): "The physical healing of Christian Science results now, as in Jesus' time, from the operation of divine Principle, before which sin and disease lose their reality in human consciousness and disappear as naturally and as necessarily as darkness gives place to light and sin to reformation. Now, as then, these mighty works are not supernatural, but supremely natural."

The reverend doctor is to be commended for pointing out the necessity of a "more open-minded approach to the gospel." I may state, however, that thousands of people in all walks of life gladly testify that they have found through the teachings of Christian Science the open door to a demonstrable understanding of the spiritual truths contained in the Bible. Moreover, many of these people have been lifted out of conditions of sin, sickness, sorrow, poverty, and despair into useful and happy lives through the ministrations of this Christian religion. Finally, permit me to state that Christian Scientists are willing to have their religion evaluated from the standpoint of practical results in human experience, knowing, as they do, that practical results speak louder than words.
