Signs of the Times

[Miss J. Tennant, in the Harrogate Herald, England]

"Ich dien"—I serve—might well be taken as a motto by everyone; and happy are those who can in truth say they endeavor to live up to their motto.

But most frequently the service required of us is not actual charity, nor the giving of alms, but the giving of sympathetic understanding. One of the greatest needs of the present time is the power of putting one's self in the place of others. Love and thoughtfulness must go with our service. We must be willing to forget ourselves in the need of others, and have no thought of reward. But indeed the reward is greater than we could ask or think, for God's wonderful peace fills the heart that is empty of self and which thinks only of others. Those who find life dull and empty are usually those who are selfish and self-centered. He who is ready and willing to serve has little time for feeling dull, and life becomes full of interest.
