Chronicle

In a dispatch appearing in your columns recently, covering proceedings of a Methodist conference in Lufkin, one of the attending bishops is reported as having "assailed modern literature which attacked the humanity of Jesus." During the course of the gentleman's remarks he is quoted as having taken occasion to observe that "the most subtle and insinuating form of infidelity to-day is Christian Science." Such an utterly erroneous assertion calls for correction. From the tenor of our critic's remarks it is assumed that he considers the alleged "infidelity" on the part of Christian Science is to the Master; but those who are in the least acquainted with its teachings know that never has there been more fidelity shown to the Saviour's precepts, life, and works than by these teachings; and that it is this very fidelity which is enabling its students measurably to emulate their Master's example and obey his sacred precepts.

On page 25 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has this to say regarding the point at issue: "The divinity of the Christ was made manifest in the humanity of Jesus;" and in the Church Manual, which Mrs. Eddy left to govern her church and its members, may be found the following (p. 41): "He who dated the Christian era is the Ensample in Christian Science. Careless comparison or irreverent reference to Christ Jesus is abnormal in a Christian Scientist, and is prohibited." Your readers are left to judge, from these quotations—taken from among hundreds of like tenor, to be found throughout the teachings of Christian Science—if in any way they savor of infidelity to the Man of Galilee.
