Gifts

God's gift of His "only begotten Son" is the surpassing gift of all ages, because the entire life of Christ Jesus was a gift of love to the world.

The history of Christianity is a record of gifts, of giving, and of givers, when studied in the light of Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy set us an example of how to give good gifts, and because of her wonderful gifts we find ourselves greatly enriched and able to give in a correspondingly larger measure.

A genuine gift is one which is given willingly, because we desire to give. It is a manifestation of unselfish love—not something which is simply an exchange, or carries with it a feeling of obligation; and a gift may entail some sacrifice on the part of the human giver. The Master commended the widow for her mite because "she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living." A true gift is one which meets the recipient's need or desire, which fills a lack. Peter gave such a gift when he healed the lame man who sat at the gate of the temple, asking alms.
