The Perfect Remedy
Sometimes it is asked why Christian Scientists do not use material remedies—drugs, tonics, or lotions—in the healing of disease. The answer is simple: They have no need to use them.
What is disease? Surely, we must know something of the nature of disease before we can heal it. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, tells us exactly what it is, and her simple, direct statement shows why Christian Scientists do not use material remedies. She says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 411), "Disease is an image of thought externalized."
Suppose a child wrote upon a blackboard four plus four equals twenty. There is nothing true about the statement, but to the unenlightened thought it may seem true. In order to correct the mistake, what should we recognize as the important thing to do? Just to correct the child's mistaken belief! Should we attempt this by means of drugs, tonics, lotions, or perhaps exercise? No, we would utilize mental means alone.
