For over three years I tried material aid in order to regain my health, but to no avail. I lost all faith in medicine; then I underwent a surgical operation. This seemed to relieve me for a short time only. About this time I was sent to a distant city in the hope that a change of climate would benefit me, but I grew worse instead of better. I was asked to try electricity, but said I would try nothing else.
One day, while visiting a new acquaintance, a Christian Scientist, I began to tell my troubles. She asked me why I did not try Christian Science. I answered her that I was ready for it. Before leaving I asked if she had anything that would tell me of Christian Science. She gave me a copy of The Christian Science Journal and some Christian Science Sentinels. These I took home, and read and reread the articles. From the Journal I found where the Reading Room was located, and learned that there I could procure the book spoken of in almost every article and testimony. I procured this book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. That was the greatest step I had ever taken, although I did not know it at the time. By earnest study of Science and Health, and by refusing to heed the old pains and aches, I was soon healed of almost semi-invalidism. My joy knew no bounds, for I had found the "pearl of great price," and I wanted to tell everyone.
I worked along alone for almost a year, attending an orthodox church. One day the minister preached a sermon the text of which was, "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel." There he stopped, and his sermon stopped with that thought also. I found out then that I wanted to go to the Christian Science church, and so I did. A short time after this I went to a small town to work and found that malarial fever seemed to be very prevalent there. I soon succumbed to it, and knowing so little of Christian Science and knowing no practitioner, I began to take the doctor's medicine. For three months I was up and down, growing no better, only worse. Then I went away for a two weeks' vacation. While gone I was perfectly free, but as soon as I returned and entered my room, the thought of fever came back, and that night it manifested itself. Then I took my stand and said that I was not going to take any more medicine. Accordingly, I took my Science and Health and read for about an hour; the next night I did the same; and I was completely healed.
