I should like to express in a slight degree the gratitude...
I should like to express in a slight degree the gratitude I feel for what Christian Science is doing and has done for me in the past few years. Instead of being a hopeless, helpless cripple, I am strong, well, happy, and prosperous. My husband and I are theatrical people.
One night at a performance in Mexico City I received an exceptionally beautiful bouquet. The next morning I manifested all the symptoms of tarantula poisoning. As we were under a binding contract, we had to keep going, and I kept getting worse. I called for help and a Christian Science practitioner lovingly came and stayed with me until we left. The fear of those around me, and especially of the natives who waited on me (my husband could not be spared from his work), was so great that I could not rise above it. Then we went to the interior, where the manager of the company got a doctor and they drained my arm. When conditions were such that it seemed but hours until I must pass on, my husband threw over the engagement, in spite of the strong laws regarding such a procedure, put me on a train and we left for the United States. When we reached El Paso, Texas, I at once called on a Christian Science practitioner and after that first present treatment had my first relief from pain in weeks. I had three absent treatments, and the arm that had been helpless, paralyzed, and shriveled started to improve and become normal and useful again. Several physicians who had occasion to attend to it had pronounced the arm dead.
I was bitten the first of December. By the twentieth of March I was playing the piano and doing everything with the hand and arm which the physicians wanted to amputate in Mexico City. Every day I have occasion to be thankful for all the lessons I learned while going through this experience; and my gratitude to God, to our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and to the dear practitioners who were so faithful to their trust is limitless.—(Mrs.)Nan J. Aspinwall Gable, St. Joseph, Missouri.
