Words could never express my gratitude for what I have...

Words could never express my gratitude for what I have gained through the wonderful sacrifices of Mary Baker Eddy, and that dear student of her wonderful sacrifices who came to me in the hardest hour of my life. I was brought up a Protestant, and in my childhood was very sincere; but after going out into the world I lost more and more of my faith in that religion. I studied several others, but to no avail; and finally gave it up entirely. In later years I took up the study of autosuggestion, will-power, and the so-called human mind.

Five years ago my wife became very ill from a difficulty she had had from childhood. She had suffered from a weak heart, chronic constipation, and at one time had been very ill with Bright's disease. She had become enceinte, and it seemed as if all of her ailments had come to a head. One doctor was consulted, then another; and the latter advised sending my wife to a hospital; but she went from bad to worse, and after a few weeks showed signs of insanity. Other doctors were called and an operation was decided on in order to save her life, but she woke up insane; and as she became violent, it was necessary to send her to a hospital for the insane. Then she began to be paralyzed. I was told she could not live, but on the strength of her being paralyzed I succeeded in getting her back to the private hospital. Her conditon became more and more critical. Finally, I turned back to the God I had been taught about in the Protestant church; but the more I prayed the worse my wife got.

Nine months went by and she lost her sight and became blind. One Saturday the doctor said to me: "I have to tell you the truth. Your wife has not a chance — weak heart, Bright's disease, chronic constipation, insane, paralytic, and blind, and her weight is about seventy pounds. [Before she became ill her weight was one hundred and sixty pounds.] The only thing we can do is to pray to God that she may cross the river, and the quicker she does the better for you and for her. If you were a millionaire you could do no more." He then left me for good. I asked my wife how she was, and for the first time she said, "I am tired." That evening a woman asked me to try Christian Science, but I told her she must be foolish. Sunday came, and another woman spoke to me about Christian Science She said: "The doctors have given your wife up. Try it; if it can do no good, it can do no harm. I do not know anything about Christian Science except that it can heal people." I asked her what I should do. She did not know, but said she would call up a lady who would know. She did this, and it was arranged for the Christian Scientist to be in the hospital next day (Monday). At one o'clock the Scientist and I had a talk. And this woman unfolded to me the wonderful truth about God, Life, and about Christ Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy. Was I grateful? Words can never express it. My dear wife was speedily healed of all her ills except the paralyzed condition, which took some months. On Wednesday I took my wife home, and on Sunday she was sitting up in bed eating her dinner; and for over four years she has enjoyed normal health.
