When I first heard of Christian Science, in 1887, I had...
When I first heard of Christian Science, in 1887, I had suffered for many years with headaches, supposed to be hereditary. The days were few that I was free from them. Many physicians had tried to help me and failed. At one time, when I felt them too severely, I began taking paregoric in increasing doses, from drops to dessertspoonfuls, in order to be able to do my work, besides taking patent medicines.
My husband said: "There is a Christian Science practitioner on this street. Let us go down and see if you can be helped." That evening we both went to his office. I could walk only by being held by my arm. After hearing me relate my trouble the practitioner said: "You will be better. Never fear." Hope rose high, and when we left the office I walked rapidly home. After three treatments I was healed. At the time I was a member of a Baptist church, in good and regular standing. I then decided to attend the services of the Christian Science Society, held at that time in the parlor of the practitioner's residence. I was given some literature that appealed to reason, and then bought a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
The seed of Truth had been sown, and when reading Science and Health my thought was inspired. Then, later on, in a distant city a dear sister who had been very ill was given up by her physician. I went to see her and wrote to the practitioner who had healed me to treat her. Absent treatment was given. In ten days she came downstairs to dinner. The treatments were given for one month at my request, and she was healed.
