[Written for the Sentinel]

Immanuel—"God with us"

Groweth the journey toilsome? Weariest thou with the race?
Doth discouragement still beset? Lift up a shining face!
No evil cometh where Love is! Naught can Love's child alarm;
Every Step of the way,
Every hour of the day,
Love is round and about thee, to shelter thee from all harm.

Goeth the battle against thee? Seemeth the fight too long?
Hath victory's long delaying silenced thy morning song?
Truth is defeated never, go the strife whatever length!
Every Step of the way,
Every hour of the day,
Thou art still girded and guarded with Truth's sufficient strength.

Are furnace fires awaiting? Doth the Red Sea lie ahead?
Do foes ambush the roadway thy reluctant feet must tread?
But thou art under the ægis of God's omnipotence!
Every step of the way,
Every hour of the day,
His mighty hand and outstretched arm afford thee sure defense.

Then courage, O fainting pilgrim! Onward, disheartened one!
Israel's guide is still thy God, and thou His well-loved son.
Each day's journey bringeth thee still nearer the promised land,
Every step of the way,
Every hour of the day,
Closely thy loving Father God still holdeth thy right hand.
