Realizing how very helpful the testimonies of healing...
Realizing how very helpful the testimonies of healing through Christian Science have been to me, I wish to relate a case of healing by mental surgery.
On arriving at our home, which is situated on the brow of rather a steep hill, I attempted to stop the car I was driving by applying the brake, only to find that it would not take hold. The car started down the hill at a very good speed. My son, who was standing on the sidewalk, seeing the difficulty, ran and jumped on to the running board and attempted to steer the car while I clung to the emergency brake. He saved us from going over a twenty-five foot embankment, but the car turned over another embankment about six feet high on to a street-car track. My son said, "Are you hurt, mother?" I said, "No; are you?" He said, "No." I climbed through the windshield and went back to flag a street car which was coming, and when I returned found my son still under the car. It seems that the door had swung open and the corner had caught his foot, half severing the heel.
Three men helped him into the house, and, after making him comfortable in bed, offered to telephone for a surgeon. My son said, "We are Christian Scientists." I said, "Our Physician is here." I bound up the heel, all the declaring the truth, and earnestly seeking to realize that man's life is in God, therefore indestructible. In a week's time, to mortal sense, there seemed to be little sign of healing. The wound extended from the ankle, and appeared as though it could never again unite or come together as it should. Decomposition set in, and things looked very dark. I would not let fear enter, but repeated over and over that God is the only Life and that "there is no death, no inaction, diseased action, overaction, nor reaction," as Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 427, 428). We repeated together many times "the scientific statement of being," as found on page 468 of the same book, and the Lord's Prayer. In three weeks my son was able to walk around with a cane; and in five weeks he could put on his shoe and go downtown. The hole on the side of the foot filled in, and there was perfect adhesion. He felt greatly blessed when, after meeting one who had had a similar experience, he was told that in the case of that one it had taken a year for the healing to take place.
