Beyond the power of words to express, I am grateful for...
Beyond the power of words to express, I am grateful for the benefits I have received and am receiving through my meager understanding of the Science of being, as taught in Christian Science.
Seven or eight years ago, I became afflicted with what seemed to be a very serious attack of irritation and inflammation of the skin, at times extending over my entire body. I was attended by several physicians, who kindly gave me all the relief possible. I also submitted to the application of the X-ray many times, and to the extraction of teeth to obtain relief; all of which did not produce the desired result. About four and a half years ago, in addition to this well-nigh unbearable condition, I suffered from what appeared to be shock caused by a nervous breakdown, which dealt me a far more severe blow than I had received from the attack first mentioned; for at times I seemed to be near the breaking point, or just where the next move would unbalance my reason. The attending physician finally disclosed to me the information that medical treatment would not help the condition, and that I should go away, as travel and sight-seeing might afford the much sought-for relief. I did so, but received no benefit. At this time my daughter asked me why I did not try Christian Science; and I have praised the Giver of every good and perfect gift continually since that time for the proposal from her. I immediately called upon a practitioner, and resolved then and there that I would be faithful and obtain an understanding of God, "who healeth all thy diseases." At the suggestion of the practitioner I removed the bandages from my irritated and inflamed arms. I also purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and with this book, in connection with the Bible, I began to study. In two weeks, with the help of the practitioner, eight warts which were on my hands, and which were from six months to five years old, disappeared very rapidly, leaving no trace. The other conditions healed more slowly, mainly due to my thought being steeped in time-honored beliefs in materiality and all the etceteras that accompany it; but as the Apostle Paul gloried in his infirmities for Christ's sake, so I also do thank God for the "thorn in the flesh" that spurred me to seek still more earnestly "the kingdom of God, and his righteousness."
I thank God for the kind and loving help extended to me by practitioners, for my ever increasing understanding of God, of the understanding of Christ Jesus and of his mission, and for what Mrs. Eddy, our revered Leader, has given to the world; for the discovery of Christian Science, which has blessed mankind more than anything that has appeared since the time of Christ Jesus. The Bible Lessons have been and are now most uplifting to me. These lessons, together with the study and absorption of the truth in all the periodicals, including the much prized Monitor, and all the writings of Mrs. Eddy, and the great help received through practitioners, penetrated my consciousness until I realized that God, divine Love, had given me every perfect gift, and that among those gifts are ever present perfect health, perfect strength, and perfect mental peace. I am grateful to know God as all-powerful and ever present, as the only creative Mind, Life, Truth, and Love; to know that we are reflections of this perfect Mind; that we have always been perfect, are perfect now, and always shall be; for, as Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 258), "Never born and never dying, it were impossible for man, under the government of God in eternal Science, to fall from his high estate."
