Since "Truth Seeker" has again introduced the subject of Christian Science through your paper, I am asking your consideration for the following. Our critic states that the Bible contradicts the Christian Science claim that man is immortal. Undoubtedly Christ Jesus is the best Biblical authority on all points pertaining to Christianity; and on the subject of immortality the Master said, "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." He also stated, "And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish." With reference to proofs of immortality, the works performed by Christ Jesus for himself and others, which are now being repeated by Christian Scientists in proportion to their spiritual understanding, constitute visible evidence of man's immortality and resurrection from materiality or the dead. Christian Science intelligently holds that there is no power or reality in that which mortals call evil. It contends that when the belief in evil is overcome through spiritually understanding its unreality and powerlessness, then the one so awakened becomes proportionately free from the world or evil, thus proving that in the universe as God knows it to be evil is unknown. According to the Bible, what is called evil is but the falsity, not the reality, of being; and for this reason Christ Jesus and others were able to overcome evil through spiritual understanding. Like those who, prior to the time of Jesus, looked for a fleshly Messiah, so to-day many disregard the ever-presence of the spiritual Christ and look for a corporeal Saviour, thus continuing the hopeless attempt to subordinate Spirit to matter. Jesus said plainly: "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again." It is this true spiritual awakening, or new birth, which Christian Science regards as the coming of Christ.
Regarding faith in God's power to heal and save, Christian Science teaches that this must not be blind faith, but an intelligent faith based on a correct understanding of God. With reference to the sacrament, Mary Baker Eddy has stated in her book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 20): "Jesus' history made a new calendar, which we call the Christian era; but he established no ritualistic worship. He knew that men can be baptized, partake of the Eucharist, support the clergy, observe the Sabbath, make long prayers, and yet be sensual and sinful." In the same work (p. 35) the Christian Science position is stated in these words: "Our Eucharist is spiritual communion with the one God. Our bread, 'which cometh down from heaven,' is Truth. Our cup is the cross. Our wine the inspiration of Love, the draught our Master drank and commended to his followers."
