Evening Times
In reply to a letter in your recent issue, we wish to state that it was not the intention of the undersigned to enter into any discussion, but merely to set your readers straight concerning certain statements which did not correctly set forth the teachings of Christian Science. Your correspondent's chief contention was that matter is real. With your kind permission let me state what Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, declares in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 468): "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual."
This statement was proved to be true by Mrs. Eddy; and hundreds of thousands of students of Christian Science have also proved it true, in that the understanding of it has brought to them surcease from sin, sickness, sorrow—discord of all kinds. Furthermore, her statements are absolutely in accord with the teachings of Jesus the Christ, who was the most effectual healer of disease and the greatest reformer ever known. He was the Way-shower: to follow him in the way he taught is the course all true Christians must eventually pursue.
