Feeling that I have too long withheld giving my testimony...
Feeling that I have too long withheld giving my testimony of the many benefits I have received from Christian Science, I am now sending it in the hope that it may prove a help to those who read it.
On the twenty-fourth day of August, 1915, I was taken to my home in a semiconscious state, in charge of a nurse, dimly aware that things were not normal. I gradually learned from my family that on the Fourth of July I had been riding with friends when our automobile was struck by an ambulance and completely demolished, all five of the occupants of our car being taken to hospitals in an unconscious state. I was taken to the hospital in the car which was responsible for the accident, but my condition was considered so hopeless that the surgeon refused to operate, saying I could live only a few hours at most. News of the accident, however, reached Christian Science friends, who knew that Christian Science treatment would be the kind of treatment I would want; so a practitioner was located and went to work on the case. After sixteen hours had elapsed the surgeon decided to operate; and in describing the case some time ago to other physicians he said, "She was so badly mutilated that we left her all night to die, and she would n't."
Besides broken bones and other injuries to the body, there was a double fracture of the skull at its base and torn brain tissues. I was not suffering, and although the physicians and surgeons at the hospital insisted that even if I lived I would always have to be cared for, I resumed my former occupation, that of stenographer, and have satisfactorily occupied a position much more difficult than any I had previously filled.
