In 1902, an accident occurred which left me with spinal and eye trouble. After eight years of treatment by the best of physicians without being healed, and after exhausting every material help, I was slowly losing my sight and becoming an invalid. I had thought of Christian Science as a foolish belief, but as a last resort I turned to it; and the first treatment from a practitioner proved to me that Christian Science could heal, because in a few days I was relieved from fear and pain. In a short time the fear of light hurting the eyes was destroyed, and in three weeks what the doctors called trachoma of the left me. The remainder of the healing has been slow, but one wrong condition after another has disappeared. In three years I could go about without getting lost, and in the fourth year I was able to read. I am now enjoying my freedom, and am able to earn my own living and to read the Lesson-Sermons and the Christian Science literature.
Before becoming a Christian Scientist I was a member of the Lutheran church. As I failed to get a spiritual understanding of healing from this church, I gladly left it and later joined a Christian Science church.
On one occasion, while nursing, my knowledge of the truth helped me to demonstrate harmony when the patient was strangling. I was protected from drowning, and was healed of smallpox and scarlet fever in two and three days respectively with the help of a practitioner. I have also been helped financially and morally. I have a brighter outlooks and am happy in my surroundings. Best of all is the spiritual uplift, which accompanies the understanding that God is an ever present help.
