Activity and Supply

THROUGHOUT the world mankind is largely engaged in some form of work, much of which is important in that it contributes to the well-being of the race. The Christian Scientist is engaged in the work of learning and applying the spiritual facts of existence of his daily activities. Since many of these activities seem to be closely associated with the question of supply, the truth about God and His creation must be understood in order that the true relationship between these two questions may be manifested.

One of the universal beliefs of mortals is that supply consists of matter; that we must work to obtain some of this matter, usually in the form of money; that if we are unable to obtain this matter in sufficient quantity, we shall lack the necessities of life. We learn, however, in studying and applying the teachings of Christian Science, that man is, as the Bible declares in the first chapter of Genesis, the image and likeness of God. And since God, the creator of the universe, is Spirit, it follows that man is spiritual.

True supply, then, must consist of the spiritual ideas of divine Mind, which are ever being unfolded through man. Therefore the real man does not work for supply: God, divine Love, gives this spiritual supply to man. As our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has said in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 307), "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies." However, this truth concerning supply does not imply that activity on the part of mankind is unnecessary.
