Daily Times
In an issue of recent date you reported a sermon by a Christian minister who went out of his way to make a disrespectful and discourteous reference to Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy is loved and revered by millions of people who have accepted her teachings and have received great benefits through the study and practice of Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy's place in religious history has been recognized by the greatest thinkers and authorities in the world. Her teachings appeal to the intelligence of mankind. The New International Cyclopedia, volume five, at page 286, says, "As a religious movement, Christian Science is notable for the rapidity of its growth and the intelligent class of people which it has attracted."
Mrs. Eddy taught a religion of love. Her teachings are based upon two great commandments, as given to us by our beloved Master, Christ Jesus. First, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind." Second, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." Mrs. Eddy also advised her students, "Follow your Leader only so far as she follows Christ" (Messageto The Mother Church for 1901, p. 34). If the reverend critic were acquainted with the life and works of Mrs. Eddy, understood her teachings, and knew the extent of the wonderful blessings she has brought to the lives of hundreds of thousands of her followers, he would never again make a disrespectful or a discourteous remark concerning her name or teachings.
