As a child I wondered why we did not more fully practice...
As a child I wondered why we did not more fully practice the teachings of the Bible. When I asked questions about this, I was told that they were not practical for our time, and that the teaching of Jesus and his healing work were for his time only. I wanted to know why we took medicine, how it knew what to do, where to go, and what was expected of it. When I asked how people knew what to think,—what it was right to think and what right to believe,—I was told I should think in the way every one else thought.
A number of years ago, I realized I was not thinking as I ought to, and I wondered what Christian Science was,—if it would help me to get my thoughts straightened out and teach me how to think rightly. It was two years afterward that I received my first help from a Christian Science practitioner. I had been an invalid for fourteen years, and had spent the larger part of the last year in bed. Some of the best physicians and surgeons in different parts of the country had tried to help me, but there was nothing more they could do,—one physician even refusing to try.
My sister, who is a trained medical nurse, opened the way for me to have Christian Science. Several days before the help was asked for, the Bible was all that I could see to read. I read about the work that Jesus did,—how he cured every kind of disease; and I knew that God could heal me, too, if I could find out how to have it done. I loved life, and knew there was something more to know than I knew. Nothing was said to the practitioner about the eyes, but through the treatments that were given I received strength and an understanding that Life is not in blood or in the body, but is God. I found that Love is our Life; that sight is spiritual, not dependent upon any material structure; that divine Love is the discerner of all things,—and the eyes were healed.
